Going to California
"Let's go play, Mimi!" "OK", I say. "What are we going to play." "We can have a race", says Evan. Evan gets the wooden cars and train out of the toy box and lines them up on the living room floor. He draws some lines in the carpet with his finger. He says, " These are woads. This one is a bumpy woad, this one is a curvy woad, this one is a smooth woad and this one is straight. " He drives the train over one of the roads until it ends then says, " There's no more woad". "Get a bulldozer and make the road longer", I say. He gets a triangular piece of wood out of the toy box and starts dragging it around on the carpet. "It's not working", he says. "We've got to take the cars to California". I said, "Why do we have to go to California". He says, "That's where they race." "How are we going to get them to California?", I say. "In this car (the wooden ferry). We need a ramp", he says. He gets the ramps and carefully lines them up and tells me to load the cars and be sure to load the train first. He says, "I'll play my song while you load the cars." So, while Evan plays the piano I dutifully drive each car across the living room floor, up the ramp and onto the ferry. As soon as the cars are loaded I announce to Evan that they are ready to go to California. He runs ahead to lead the way to California. I follow, pushing the ferry loaded with cars and calling out the names of states as we head west (into the den). Finally Evan says, "Here's California (the couch)" I deposit the cars in California and Evan unloads them, lines them up on the floor and proceeds to race and wreck each car! Not a single car won a race. We went all the way to California just to wreck all the cars!
